Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

Apply online and send the requested documents by email or post, as the city offers no appointments for handing them in.

Bring the documents the office asks you for individually; a general checklist may not cover everything. The eAT procedure takes about six to eight weeks; this is an estimate, not a guaranteed decision time. An ordinary first residence permit costs €100 and a renewal for more than three months costs €93; other cases cost different amounts, and minors pay half of these rates. Ask which fee applies to you. You can pay by EC card. Postal address: Bundesstadt Bonn, 53103 Bonn. If an eAT is to be issued, you need a digital biometric photo sent through a secure channel; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Before your appointment, ask which photo process the office accepts.

For a renewal, have your university complete and sign the city’s study-progress certificate, not a statement of your own.

For renewal, obtain the university’s completed, signed Studienverlaufsbescheinigung using the linked city form. Follow the individual request for identity, study and financial evidence rather than assuming this certificate alone is enough. Confirm your fee and wait for the appointment instructions. If posting documents use Bundesstadt Bonn, 53103 Bonn. If an eAT is to be issued, a securely transmitted digital biometric photo is required; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Confirm the office’s approved photo process before your appointment.
