Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

103 offices
  • Aachen

StädteRegion Aachen — Aufenthaltsangelegenheiten II (A 33.3 II)

    Hackländerstraße 1, 52064 Aachen

If you are a non-EU family member of an EU or EEA citizen, contact the team first to confirm who handles your case.

Select the relevant family residence-card option on the combined form. The application requires a valid passport/replacement, the sponsor’s identity document, family relationship evidence and evidence of the sponsor’s free-movement basis, with originals and copies. It requires a digital photo and offers an optional on-site photo for €6; confirm its location. Card charges are €46 or €27.60 at the under-24 rate; confirm the relevant age date, exemptions and payment. Follow the live digital-photo instructions when using the older blank form.

  • Aachen

StädteRegion Aachen — Ausländerbehörde, Infostelle Aachen Arkaden

Trierer Straße 1, Aachen Arkaden, 52078 Aachen

Book an advice and application appointment online, and go to the address in your confirmation, not an older one.

The appointment confirmation specifies your documents; the general procedure asks for originals and copies. Prepare valid passport/identity evidence and proof relevant to your purpose of stay, means of support and insurance where required. Ask about the accepted digital photo and any further evidence for your category. Fees are assessed for the actual procedure; follow current payment instructions. Keep proof of applications and correspondence, and clarify your individual status before relying on travel or work rights.

  • Aachen

    For international students

StädteRegion Aachen — Geschäftsstelle FH / Immigration office

    Hackländerstraße 1, 2. Etage, 52064 Aachen

Book online under the FH Aachen student category, choosing one service per person.

Prepare the application form, passport, current digital photograph, enrolment certificate, funding and health-insurance evidence. From the third semester the checklist also asks for a full academic transcript (großer Notenspiegel). Supply copies and bring originals if your appointment confirmation requests them. For students, the fee is €100 for first issue and €93 for renewal, with possible onsite digital photos at €6 per applicant; confirm the amount, exemptions and accepted payment for your case. Card collection is a separate appointment at Aachen Arkaden, not automatically at this university branch.

  • Aachen

    For international students

StädteRegion Aachen — Geschäftsstelle RWTH / SuperC

    Templergraben 57, 52062 Aachen

Pick the RWTH student category when booking in the immigration portal, and arrive only with a confirmed appointment.

  • Augsburg

    For residence permit holders

Stadt Augsburg — Sachgebiet Migration und Aufenthalt

An der Blauen Kappe 18, 86152 Augsburg

Start with the signed renewal form, a passport copy, your employer’s confirmation and your last three payslips.

Prepare the four required items and state your current permit’s expiry date. Retain the application, supporting documents and submission or correspondence evidence; seek confirmation before relying on a deadline or interim-status document. Ask the team about any further insurance, financial, photograph or other evidence for your specific permit. This list concerns employee renewals, not a universal checklist for first issue or all residence categories. If a new electronic card will be issued, confirm the current digital-photo and personal-appointment instructions with the authority.

  • Augsburg

Stadt Augsburg — Sachgebiet Migration und Aufenthalt

An der Blauen Kappe 18, 86152 Augsburg

Ask for an appointment through the general contact form, and wait for the team to send you a date.

Ask for the evidence required for your particular permit, and supply requested material through the encrypted official form or by post. Mention the current permit’s expiry and retain correspondence. The city’s employment and student document lists are not a universal checklist for general cases. Confirm fees and any interim-status document with the team; an appointment request alone is not evidence of travel or work rights. If an eAT is to be issued, a securely transmitted digital biometric photo is required; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Confirm the office’s approved photo process before your appointment.

  • Augsburg

    For international students

Stadt Augsburg — Sachgebiet Migration und Aufenthalt

An der Blauen Kappe 18, 86152 Augsburg

Send the student team your signed renewal form, a passport copy and proof of enrolment through its contact form.

Prepare the three required renewal documents before contacting the team and keep copies of correspondence. Ask about additional finance, insurance, photo or other evidence for your case rather than applying another city’s checklist. Confirm fees and any interim-status document with the authority. The Hochschulbetreuungsstelle also offers university advice at [email protected]; that advisory contact does not replace the city’s permit application. If an eAT is to be issued, a securely transmitted digital biometric photo is required; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Confirm the office’s approved photo process before your appointment.

  • Berlin

    For international students

    Landesamt für Einwanderung — Keplerstraße

    Keplerstraße 2, 10589 Berlin

Apply online first, and the immigration office invites you to an appointment only if your documents pass review.

Prepare passport and entry/title copies, admission or enrolment, insurance, Berlin housing and funding evidence; extensions need study progress evidence. Save the final PDF confirmation. Its continuation wording for an existing D visa or residence permit does not cover a short-stay C visa; check your own status before relying on it. If an eAT is to be issued, a securely transmitted digital biometric photo is required; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Confirm the office’s approved photo process before your appointment.

  • Berlin

    Landesamt für Einwanderung — Keplerstraße

    Keplerstraße 2, 10589 Berlin

Apply online no earlier than four months before your visa or work permit ends, then wait for the invitation.

Prepare colour passport copies, current title, contract or job offer, employer employment declaration, degree recognition, insurance and housing evidence. Extensions also need recent employer confirmation and payslips; bring originals when invited. The PDF continuation statement excludes a C visa and a title already expired when applying. Check the official checklist for pension evidence and any professional licence. If an eAT is to be issued, a securely transmitted digital biometric photo is required; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Confirm the office’s approved photo process before your appointment.

  • Bielefeld

    For international students

    Kommunale Ausländerbehörde Bielefeld

Niederwall 23, Neues Rathaus, 33602 Bielefeld

After applying online, book a separate appointment to give your digital photo and pay.

Prepare the application, valid national passport, current digital biometric photograph, enrolment confirmation, health-insurance evidence and proof of living funds, such as a blocked account, scholarship or formal declaration of commitment. From the third semester, also provide the current study-progress record and transcript. Use municipal PointID or a certified photographer’s digital QR code; paper photos are not accepted. Payment is cash, Girocard, debit or credit card.

  • Bielefeld

    Kommunale Ausländerbehörde Bielefeld

Niederwall 23, Neues Rathaus, 33602 Bielefeld

Choose your residence purpose in the online service portal, since many applications can start there before a visit.

Check the checklist for your exact permit before sending documents. The office accepts advance application papers such as passport copies and financing evidence by email or post. Work-related forms and family-life declarations are linked where relevant. For a settlement permit, wait for confirmation of the preliminary review before the visit. Ask the office about any interim certificate needed; its issue is examined individually rather than guaranteed. If an eAT is to be issued, a securely transmitted digital biometric photo is required; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Confirm the office’s approved photo process before your appointment.

  • Bochum

    For international students

    Ausländerbüro der Stadt Bochum

    Willy-Brandt-Platz 2–6, Rathaus Bochum, 44787 Bochum

From the fifth semester the city also asks your university to say whether and when you are expected to finish.

Prepare passport/travel document, current digital biometric photo, phone/email and enrolment certificate or evidence of language-course/Studienkolleg participation. Supply health-insurance and funding evidence: for example a blocked account, scholarship or formal undertaking, with regular incoming-payment statements where requested. From semester five obtain the institution’s completion assessment. Ask about additional evidence and your fee; no approval or processing time is guaranteed.

  • Bochum

    Ausländerbüro der Stadt Bochum

    Willy-Brandt-Platz 2–6, Rathaus Bochum, 44787 Bochum

Start with the city’s online application and pick the reason for your stay, such as work, study or family.

Prepare passport/travel document, a current digital biometric photo, income evidence and your phone/email. The city gives three wage slips or a tax adviser’s income certificate as examples. Include a Jobcenter decision, school certificate for school-age children and integration-course participation evidence where relevant. Additional evidence depends on the residence purpose; confirm the fee and personal-appointment requirements.

  • Bonn

    Ausländeramt der Bundesstadt Bonn

    Am Propsthof 10, 53121 Bonn

Apply online and send the requested documents by email or post, as the city offers no appointments for handing them in.

Bring the documents the office asks you for individually; a general checklist may not cover everything. The eAT procedure takes about six to eight weeks; this is an estimate, not a guaranteed decision time. An ordinary first residence permit costs €100 and a renewal for more than three months costs €93; other cases cost different amounts, and minors pay half of these rates. Ask which fee applies to you. You can pay by EC card. Postal address: Bundesstadt Bonn, 53103 Bonn. If an eAT is to be issued, you need a digital biometric photo sent through a secure channel; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Before your appointment, ask which photo process the office accepts.

  • Bonn

    For international students

    Ausländeramt der Bundesstadt Bonn

    Am Propsthof 10, 53121 Bonn

For a renewal, have your university complete and sign the city’s study-progress certificate, not a statement of your own.

For renewal, obtain the university’s completed, signed Studienverlaufsbescheinigung using the linked city form. Follow the individual request for identity, study and financial evidence rather than assuming this certificate alone is enough. Confirm your fee and wait for the appointment instructions. If posting documents use Bundesstadt Bonn, 53103 Bonn. If an eAT is to be issued, a securely transmitted digital biometric photo is required; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Confirm the office’s approved photo process before your appointment.

  • Braunschweig

    Stadt Braunschweig — Ausländerangelegenheiten

    Friedrich-Seele-Straße 7, 38122 Braunschweig

Register your address, apply online within three months of arriving, then wait for the personal invitation.

Follow the application’s individual document checklist and bring requested originals. BundID (German federal online account) is optional: after entering the postcode, choose Weitere Optionen. Keep the receipt; avoid duplicate email applications. Federal rules allow the office to request a valid recognised passport or substitute, proof of the family relationship and the EU citizen’s registration confirmation. Dependent relatives and other qualifying close persons can need additional evidence. Follow the personalised checklist rather than assuming marriage evidence alone is sufficient.

  • Braunschweig

    For international students

    Stadt Braunschweig — Ausländerangelegenheiten

    Friedrich-Seele-Straße 7, 38122 Braunschweig

Apply online at least four weeks before your permit expires, and do not send a duplicate by email.

Follow the exact evidence checklist shown in the online application for your circumstances; the office may request more documents after review. Bring originals requested with your appointment. Paper photos are not accepted: use a compatible digital-photo provider and bring its QR code, or the paid capture terminal in waiting area 1 or 2. Allow about fifteen minutes for capture plus possible queues, following the appointment instructions. If you need step-free access, contact +49 531 470-6072 shortly before the appointment. Fees depend on the case and are communicated after application; no general processing time is promised.

  • Bremen

    Migrationsamt Bremen

    Stresemannstraße 48, 28207 Bremen

Wait for the city’s letter asking for your documents, and email if none has arrived one month before expiry.

Supply the evidence requested for your permit and report relevant changes, including family circumstances or new official decisions. Keep your case reference available and follow the appointment’s identity-document instructions. Only approved digital passport photos are accepted: use a compliant photo provider or the authority’s capture system; displaying a photo on your phone is insufficient. Do not assume a submitted enquiry or a later appointment alone proves permission to travel or work; ask the authority about your individual status.

  • Bremen

    For international students

    Migrationsamt Bremen

    Stresemannstraße 48, 28207 Bremen

Send your application by email or post, ideally eight weeks before your visa or permit expires.

Prepare your passport, admission or enrolment, funding evidence such as a blocked account or formal undertaking, and health-insurance evidence. For continuing study, provide progress and completion-prospect evidence when requested; for preparation, provide course or Studienkolleg acceptance. A current digital biometric photo is required. Follow the authority’s photo instructions and individual checklist; the procedure normally runs in German.

  • Chemnitz

Ausländer- und Staatsangehörigkeitsbehörde — Stadt Chemnitz

Düsseldorfer Platz 1, Bürgerhaus am Wall, 09111 Chemnitz

Pick the online service that matches your reason for staying, because each purpose has its own application.

Prepare passport or accepted travel document and the evidence specified in the chosen application. A biometric photograph and further purpose-specific documents are required; confirm the current digital-photo arrangements before attending. The local procedure says examination can take weeks and gives a non-guaranteed eAT estimate of up to six weeks or longer. Confirm the applicable permit fee, payment method and any expiry-sensitive action directly. The authority’s postal postcode is 09106 Chemnitz.
