Offices for swapping and replacing driving licences

Online, by appointment or both: it depends on your city

Many cities take licence swaps at a citizens’ office, while others use a separate driving licence authority. Whether you can apply online with a digital ID, and whether the new card must be collected in person, depends on the city. The right counter may also depend on your situation, such as an old paper licence or a lorry or bus category.

    Garmischer Straße 19–21, 81373 Munich

Apply up to six months before expiry, online with an electronic ID or at a booked appointment, with medical evidence.

Prepare ID/passport, biometric photo, current licence, eyesight report and medical fitness certificate. For a D entitlement extending beyond age 50, provide the additional assessment by an authorised assessment centre or occupational physician. For a grey/pink licence issued outside Munich, ask the original issuing authority to send its licence-record extract directly to Munich. Have the eyesight examination certified by an ophthalmologist or occupational physician. Munich also accepts reports under Annex 6 no. 2.1 of the FeV from an optician business; not every vision-test centre is an optician business.
