Offices for swapping and replacing driving licences

Online, by appointment or both: it depends on your city

Many cities take licence swaps at a citizens’ office, while others use a separate driving licence authority. Whether you can apply online with a digital ID, and whether the new card must be collected in person, depends on the city. The right counter may also depend on your situation, such as an old paper licence or a lorry or bus category.

  • Leipzig

    Stadt Leipzig — Fahrerlaubnisbehörde

Prager Straße 130–136, Technisches Rathaus, Haus A; Eingang A.I, Wartebereich A.1.014, 04317 Leipzig

Send your application by post or drop it in the document box without an appointment, or book to apply in person.

For postal submission, use the printed, completed and signed application, attach the biometric photograph in its marked frame, and add the separate specimen signature inside the lines. Include copies of both sides of ID and licence; a residence card alone is insufficient without a passport copy. If a paper licence was issued elsewhere, request the issuer’s Karteikartenabschrift or authorise Leipzig to obtain it using the application. For an in-person application, bring original ID, licence, biometric photo and the required record copy. An eyesight test is needed only if requesting a change to the recorded eyesight-aid requirement under this form.
