Where to register your car in German cities

Simple cases may run online, while others need a visit

The vehicle registration office of your city or district handles new registrations, imports and changes of owner. Straightforward cases may start online while others need an appointment, and a car brought in from abroad calls for extra papers.

51 offices
  • Augsburg

    Bürgerbüro Stadtmitte

An der Blauen Kappe 18, 86152 Augsburg

Keep your German plates, and use the online portal instead of a counter visit if your documents allow it.

Prepare registration certificates Parts I and II subject to the stated exception, eVB insurance confirmation, keeper ID/passport, SEPA vehicle-tax mandate and plates if not retained. Representatives need authorisation and their own ID. For a minor, include guardian consent and ID; companies need business registration. Follow the separate import instructions before booking if any vehicle documents are foreign. Online: check required document security codes and inspection validity. After approval, retrieve the decision and temporary proof within 30 minutes; print, carry/display them as instructed before driving. Temporary proof permits ten days; follow the replacement-document instructions.

  • Berlin

    Kfz-Zulassungsbehörde Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg

    Jüterboger Straße 3, 10965 Berlin

Visits need an appointment, and with the building work you should pay by card and expect little parking.

For a new vehicle, prepare ID/passport with residence evidence, vehicle document Part II, COC or the required technical approval, seven-character insurance eVB and vehicle-tax SEPA mandate. Representatives need authority and identity evidence; organisations have additional documents. Used EU/EEA imports also need original foreign registration papers, purchase evidence, available plates and appropriate inspection/technical evidence. Registration in Berlin does not automatically deregister the vehicle abroad. Other used imports require customs and technical checks; COC alone is sufficient only under the stated recognition conditions. Ask about any §21 report, inspection or exemption before paying.

  • Berlin

    Kfz-Zulassungsbehörde Lichtenberg

    Ferdinand-Schultze-Straße 55, 13055 Berlin

Visits need an appointment, and used imports are arranged first through a contact form.

  • Bielefeld

    Stadt Bielefeld – Kfz-Zulassungsbehörde

    Paulusstraße 8, Amerikahaus, 33602 Bielefeld

Eligible cases can be filed online with BundID if your roadworthiness inspection is valid and you owe no vehicle tax.

Prepare identity documents, registration papers, valid inspection evidence, eVB insurance number and a vehicle-tax SEPA mandate. Part II is required for specified changes, including keeper, name, technical details or plates. Imports additionally need proof of ownership, foreign papers and any existing foreign plates; COC or technical reports depend on approval status, and non-EU imports require customs evidence. A representative needs the city’s authority form including tax/fee disclosure consent. The authority may require presentation of the imported vehicle.

  • Bochum

    Büro für Kfz-Angelegenheiten — Kfz-Zulassung

    Bulksmühle 17, 44809 Bochum

Straightforward cases can be done online, but a financed vehicle whose papers are with the bank needs a visit to the office.

Prepare keeper ID/passport, registration part II if already available or the COC conformity document, eVB insurance confirmation and the signed vehicle-tax SEPA mandate. Representatives also need their ID and authority; companies need business/register evidence and identification. Check extra requirements for minors, the actual fee and online eligibility. You can pay at the office by cash or EC card.

  • Bonn

    Dienstleistungszentrum im Stadthaus

    Berliner Platz 2, 53111 Bonn

Financed or leased vehicles, and electric, historic or seasonal plates, are handled only at the main city office.

Bring part II, EC conformity certificate, eVB insurance number, keeper ID/passport, tax SEPA mandate and plates. A plate reservation must be current in your name and does not guarantee allocation. Representatives need authority and both parties’ IDs; businesses/associations need relevant register evidence. The main procedure costs at least €30, with extras depending on work. For immediate use after i-KFZ, download the provisional proof within 30 minutes, display it and follow the ten-calendar-day Germany-only conditions; plates must be fitted.

  • Braunschweig

    Stadt Braunschweig — Zulassungsstelle

    Porschestraße 5, 38112 Braunschweig

Book the used-import appointment and bring the extra papers that vehicles from abroad need.

Prepare valid ID; with a passport, add a current registration certificate. Bring complete original foreign vehicle papers, existing foreign plates if available, purchase contract or invoice, eVB insurance code, signed vehicle-tax SEPA mandate, inspection evidence under §29 StVZO and an application for registration certificate Part II if not already held. EU imports need CoC including emissions data or a §21 report if absent. Non-EU imports additionally need customs clearance; CoC/manufacturer confirmation suffices only if the foreign papers show recognition of the EC type approval, otherwise clarify the §21 report. Ask about VAT reporting for recently first-registered EU vehicles. A representative needs written authority, disclosure consent, both parties’ ID evidence and the keeper-signed SEPA mandate; a different account holder must also sign. Companies, associations and minors need further documents. Confirm the complete case-specific checklist and fees before travelling.

  • Bremen

    BürgerServiceCenter-Stresemannstraße

    Stresemannstraße 48, 28207 Bremen

Book an appointment rather than walking in, as the walk-in sessions are only for travel documents and address registration.

Prepare original identity documents, an eVB insurance confirmation, the vehicle-tax SEPA mandate and evidence appropriate to the vehicle, such as registration part II and the COC conformity certificate. Bring any reserved-number confirmation. Representatives need written authority and their own ID; businesses need current business-registration evidence and any commercial-register extract. Ask about inspection of a vehicle needing its first part II document and customs clearance for non-EU imports. Confirm the exact checklist for your case before attending.

  • Chemnitz

    Kraftfahrzeugzulassungsbehörde Chemnitz

Düsseldorfer Platz 1, Bürgerhaus Am Wall, 09111 Chemnitz

Register your new home address first, then arrange the vehicle transfer, normally keeping your current plates.

Bring ID or passport with current registration evidence, registration certificate Part I, valid HU inspection report, eVB insurance confirmation and vehicle-tax SEPA mandate. Part II is required when assigning new plates; bring old plates unless keeping them or the vehicle is deregistered. A representative needs written authority including consent to disclose vehicle-tax arrears and identification. Business and minor applicants need additional authority documents. Use originals or certified copies; confirm the exact checklist for a change of keeper.

  • Cologne

    Kfz-Zulassungsstelle Köln

    Max-Glomsda-Straße 4, 51105 Cologne

Register online if your case is eligible, and book an appointment if it is not.

Prepare part II if available, otherwise the dealer’s confirmation of no previous registration in Germany/abroad and no issued registration documents; also COC, eVB, keeper ID and tax SEPA mandate. The mandate requires account-holder AND keeper signatures even if details were supplied for another vehicle. Standard counter fee €30, with possible additions; online €12.80 plus €2.85 registered delivery. Plates cost extra. Counter payment is by card, online credit card/PayPal. Confirm the case total.

  • Dortmund

Bürgerdienste – Dienstleistungszentrum Innenstadt (EWO, KFZ)

    Südwall 2-4, 44137 Dortmund

Keeping your current plates does not spare you from updating your vehicle documents.

For the standard registered-vehicle transfer prepare Parts I and II, eVB insurance confirmation, plates, HU inspection report, photo ID and SEPA mandate. Keeping the same keeper and plates has a reduced checklist: Part I, HU and ID; Part II only for a name change. A representative needs written authority, consent to disclosure of vehicle-tax information and ID; ask whether originals are required, as the rules for representatives differ from those for ordinary copies. Businesses and minors need additional authority or guardian evidence. Online keeper changes require security-coded documents, valid inspection, eVB and an account for tax collection.

  • Dresden

    Kfz-Zulassungsbehörde Dresden

    Hauboldstraße 7, 01239 Dresden

Choose the exact transaction when booking, as new, moved and imported vehicles each need different papers.

For a new vehicle, prepare ID/passport, eVB insurance confirmation, the vehicle-tax SEPA mandate, registration certificate Part II and certificate of conformity. For a domestic transfer, prepare ID, Part I and the inspection report; a keeper change or deregistered vehicle additionally needs Part II, eVB and SEPA evidence. Bring previous plates and Part II where a move involves changing plates. A representative needs authorisation including consent to disclose tax and fee arrears; companies need the applicable register/business evidence. If Part II is held by a lender or leasing company, arrange delivery to the authority beforehand and allow postal time. Online applications need the applicable covered security codes, electronic identification, IBAN and payment method; follow the decision and temporary-document instructions you receive before driving. Do not reveal security codes merely to check eligibility.

  • Duisburg

    Fahrzeugzulassung Duisburg

    Theodor-Heuss-Straße 80, 1.01, 1. OG, 47167 Duisburg

Book ahead and bring a payment card, as the vehicle office takes only cashless payment.

Common evidence includes identity, applicable business records, eVB insurance confirmation and a vehicle-tax SEPA mandate. A new vehicle needs its Part II and conformity/type-approval evidence as applicable. Imported used vehicles additionally need original purchase evidence, foreign papers/plates, conformity or individual approval and valid inspection evidence; non-EU imports also list customs clearance. A representative needs authority and identification. Follow the exact checklist; a general appointment does not waive missing documents or import requirements.

  • Düsseldorf

    KFZ-Zulassungsbehörde Düsseldorf

    Höherweg 101, 40233 Düsseldorf

You can keep your existing plates when moving to Düsseldorf, but the address must be updated.

Prepare registration Part I and, where required, Part II, valid HU evidence, eVB insurance number, SEPA mandate and the keeper’s original ID or passport; non-EU keepers need residence-permit evidence. Check the retained-plate exception above. A representative needs authority, their ID, the keeper’s ID and SEPA mandate. For a new vehicle, prepare the CoC and Part II if issued; otherwise the original invoice is required. Imports need foreign vehicle papers and CoC or technical evidence; non-EU imports also require customs clearance evidence. Used imports need the foreign plates if still registered and the appropriate HU/technical inspection documents. Ask about VAT notification where VAT is not shown on the invoice. Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes requiring identification must be presented unless an accepted inspection report, no older than seven days, proves their identity. Check the complete new/import checklist before your appointment.

  • Erfurt

    Zulassungsbehörde Erfurt

    Bürgermeister-Wagner-Straße 1, 99084 Erfurt

Book the exact service you need online, as only the task you booked will be handled.

Ordinary registration requires identity, registration certificate Part II, eVB insurance confirmation and SEPA mandate. Used vehicles additionally need Part I and valid HU inspection evidence, plus old plates when changing plates; new vehicles need conformity or approval evidence. Imports require their own checklist: purchase evidence unless retaining the same keeper, foreign vehicle papers, conformity or technical approval documents, and relevant inspection evidence. Non-EEA imports also require customs clearance evidence. Ask about a prior §70 exemption if the technical report requires one. Confirm the complete documents and fees; do not treat this summary as a guarantee of approval.

Kraftfahrzeugzulassungen und Fahrerlaubnisse Essen — Altendorfer Straße

    Altendorfer Straße 101, 45143 Essen

For a used import, bring the foreign registration documents and, if still registered, the foreign plates.

Zulassungsbehörde für Kraftfahrzeuge Frankfurt am Main

Am Römerhof 19, 60486 Frankfurt am Main

For a new vehicle, bring your insurance confirmation number and a direct-debit mandate for the vehicle tax.

Bring identification and the documents for your registration type. For a domestic move, include Part I and valid inspection evidence. When the vehicle remains registered, you keep its plates and the keeper does not change, the city waives Part II, eVB and a new SEPA mandate. Representatives need written authority, a readable colour copy of the keeper’s ID and their own original ID.

  • Gelsenkirchen

    Kfz-Zulassungsstelle Gelsenkirchen

Wildenbruchstraße 10, Dienstgebäude Landeszentralbank, 45875 Gelsenkirchen

Check for unpaid fees from earlier registrations before your visit, as they can block a new one.

For a used German vehicle prepare original identity, registration certificates I and II, eVB insurance confirmation, the signed tax SEPA mandate and any required old plates and roadworthiness evidence. Representation needs authority and the representative’s ID. Imported vehicles have a separate checklist including foreign papers, purchase evidence and the applicable conformity, inspection and customs documents. Ask about the precise import case; registration in Germany does not automatically deregister the car abroad.
