Book and pay for the import inspection online, while an ordinary ownership transfer needs no appointment.
For a Dutch ownership transfer, bring the valid registration card and complete transfer code, or the original paper registration and transfer documents, plus accepted original ID. A Dutch driving licence works at ordinary registration shops; RDW (Dutch vehicle and driving licence authority) locations also accept alternatives such as a foreign national passport or qualifying EU/EFTA ID. Have your BSN (citizen service number) ready if it is not on your ID. Online transfer requires your own DigiD (the Dutch digital ID for government websites) app with ID check and cannot use a paper registration certificate. Insurance and any inspection obligations begin when the vehicle is in your name; keep the seller’s release document and check the completed transfer. For an EU/EFTA import, bring the complete original foreign registration and accepted ID; copy the registration first for any BPM tax declaration. A certificate of conformity can help but is not mandatory for this ordinary route. Bring proof of a valid foreign inspection if you want it recognised. Arrange BPM where applicable, insurance and plates after approval. A one-day registration is only for the shortest insured, safe trip within the Netherlands on the inspection day; it does not cover collecting a car abroad or ordinary driving while waiting. If the vehicle has an individual approval issued by a European country rather than EU type approval, bring its individual approval certificate (IGC).
