Offices that exchange foreign driving licences in Germany

Some ask for copies by email before they give you an appointment

Exchanges are handled by the local driving licence authority, often called the Führerscheinstelle or Fahrerlaubnisbehörde, which in many places sits within the city or district administration. Some offices begin with copies of your licence sent by email, others assess it at the counter, and many ask for a German translation.

    Tessenowstraße 15, 39114 Magdeburg

You normally only need to exchange when your licence or one of its categories expires, and visits are by appointment.

Bring a valid identity card or passport, your valid EU/EEA licence and a current biometric portrait photo, 45 × 35 mm. A passport may also require a current registration confirmation. Ask about medical evidence where a limited heavy or bus category is involved, collection arrangements and driving entitlement while your document is handled.

    Fahrerlaubnisbehörde Magdeburg

    Tessenowstraße 15, 39114 Magdeburg

Apply early and expect to hand in your original licence, which the city returns to the authority that issued it.

Have your identity and original licence details ready. Request the individual checklist for photo, translation, eyesight, first aid and any training or examinations before paying for them. Fees follow GebOSt and direct delivery adds postage; confirm the total and processing time. A licence exchange is separate from heavy-category renewal.
