Offices that exchange foreign driving licences in Germany

Some ask for copies by email before they give you an appointment

Exchanges are handled by the local driving licence authority, often called the Führerscheinstelle or Fahrerlaubnisbehörde, which in many places sits within the city or district administration. Some offices begin with copies of your licence sent by email, others assess it at the counter, and many ask for a German translation.

    Fahrerlaubnisbehörde Dresden

    Hauboldstraße 7, 01239 Dresden

Appointments open up to two months ahead, and you may bring a trusted interpreter along.

Bring ID/passport, the original foreign licence and a current biometric 35 × 45 mm photograph. Non-EU applicants should confirm their applicable passport and residence-status evidence with the office. Dresden specifically requests evidence of establishing ordinary residence issued by the immigration authority and says a normal registration certificate is insufficient; clarify this before the visit. Where required, obtain an accepted licence translation from a publicly appointed/sworn translator in Germany or a recognised automobile club. First aid, eyesight testing, driving-school details and further medical or good-conduct evidence depend on the case and category; do not treat the C/D checklist as a universal car-licence requirement. The city quotes about €45 for the application, with possible additional storage, delivery, temporary-document or express charges. Confirm the total and collection arrangements at the appointment.
