Offices that exchange foreign driving licences in Germany

Some ask for copies by email before they give you an appointment

Exchanges are handled by the local driving licence authority, often called the Führerscheinstelle or Fahrerlaubnisbehörde, which in many places sits within the city or district administration. Some offices begin with copies of your licence sent by email, others assess it at the counter, and many ask for a German translation.

Book through the city portal or by phone and apply early, as the city estimates six to eight weeks.

Bring ID or a passport with registration evidence, the original foreign licence, a biometric photo and evidence of first or renewed residence in Germany. EU/EEA licences do not need a translation; for others confirm the accepted sworn translator or automobile-club translation. Tests and first-aid, eyesight, medical or criminal-record evidence depend on country and class. Chemnitz asks for a type O criminal-record certificate in certain third-country and bus-licence cases; confirm before ordering.
