Offices that exchange foreign driving licences in Germany

Some ask for copies by email before they give you an appointment

Exchanges are handled by the local driving licence authority, often called the Führerscheinstelle or Fahrerlaubnisbehörde, which in many places sits within the city or district administration. Some offices begin with copies of your licence sent by email, others assess it at the counter, and many ask for a German translation.

Choose the booking link that matches where your licence was issued, and ask the office if you are unsure which one applies.

Bring ID or passport, the foreign licence and a compliant photograph; check whether an official translation is needed. Bremen explicitly waives translation for Swiss licences. Other-country cases may require eyesight/first-aid evidence, medical evidence for truck/bus categories and driving-school details for required tests. Ask about expired licences and residence history before booking. Ordinary processing is four to six weeks; examinations, missing evidence and production can affect your case. Fees vary with the procedure and tests; confirm the applicable amount.
