Where to apply for a Dutch identity card

Applications and collection work differently in each city

You apply at the municipality where you are registered, and each one sets its own routine. Some ask you to book ahead, some need a second visit to hand over the card and some deliver it. Dutch citizens who live abroad can also use certain border municipalities.

Book the application online, then collect the finished card in person without a new appointment.

Bring all identity cards and passports in your name, even expired documents, a compliant photo, and cash or a payment card. For under-12s, each custodian can give consent online using their own DigiD (the Dutch digital ID for government websites). A custodian who has given online consent need not attend; those not consenting online must attend and give written consent at the counter with valid ID. Ask about evidence of sole authority or a court’s substitute consent where relevant. Check the current travel-document fee page: the applicable fee is determined by the application date. Confirm urgent availability before making travel plans.
