Where to apply for a Dutch identity card

Applications and collection work differently in each city

You apply at the municipality where you are registered, and each one sets its own routine. Some ask you to book ahead, some need a second visit to hand over the card and some deliver it. Dutch citizens who live abroad can also use certain border municipalities.

Apply in person, and your collection appointment is booked for you at the same visit.

Bring all passports and identity cards you hold, including expired documents, and a compliant colour photograph no older than six months. For applicants under 12, arrange consent from everyone with parental authority and bring their ID or copies; the municipality provides DigiD (the Dutch digital ID for government websites) consent and a paper form. If all travel documents are lost and the previous one was issued elsewhere, call first: municipal identity checks may be needed, and a driving licence is insufficient for this check.
