Where to apply for a Dutch identity card

Applications and collection work differently in each city

You apply at the municipality where you are registered, and each one sets its own routine. Some ask you to book ahead, some need a second visit to hand over the card and some deliver it. Dutch citizens who live abroad can also use certain border municipalities.

Book online and, for a child under 12, give digital parental consent at least two working days beforehand.

Bring all passports and identity cards you hold, including expired ones, a compliant photograph taken within six months and a payment card. If parental responsibility was determined by a court, bring an extract from the parental-responsibility register (gezagsregister). Consent from those with parental responsibility is required for passport applicants under 18 and identity-card applicants under 12. Submit digital consent at least two working days before an identity-card appointment. If consent is required and you cannot use DigiD (the Dutch digital ID for government websites), collect the consent form at Burgerzaken and bring it completed; the signature must match the signature on the consenting person’s identity document.
