Offices for Icelandic ID card applications

Routines for photos and walk-ins differ from office to office

ID cards come from the district commissioners (sýslumenn), and you are free to use an office outside your home district. Offices have their own routines for pre-registration, walk-ins and photos, so check yours for what to bring. Some smaller offices do not take applications, so confirm with the office before you go.

Turn up on a weekday for your application and photo, as no appointment is needed.

Bring an accepted identity document. For a travel-valid child’s card with shared custody, both guardians must consent; the second online approval is due within 30 days. For an identification-only card, one guardian’s consent is enough below age 13, and applicants aged 13 or older can apply without guardian consent. A third party accompanying a child needs written authorisation. Without valid identification, attend with two witnesses who bring identification and complete the official authentication form.
