Offices for Icelandic ID card applications

Routines for photos and walk-ins differ from office to office

ID cards come from the district commissioners (sýslumenn), and you are free to use an office outside your home district. Offices have their own routines for pre-registration, walk-ins and photos, so check yours for what to bring. Some smaller offices do not take applications, so confirm with the office before you go.

Collect a card that is ready, if you chose the national registry as your pick-up point and applied elsewhere.

Bring a valid accepted identity document: passport, Icelandic driving licence or identity card. A guardian collecting a child’s card must show identification; the child does not need to accompany the guardian for collection. A third party collecting for a child needs the required mandate. Check with the office in advance if you lack accepted identification or are collecting under other circumstances. Do not assume another person can collect an adult’s card without authorisation.
