Offices for renewing a driving licence in the Netherlands

Online renewal depends on the municipality you are registered in

Renewals and replacements are handled by your own municipality. Online renewal, booking a visit to apply, the photo you need and the way you collect the new licence can all differ from one municipality to the next.

Renew online after getting a photo from an approved provider, or book a counter visit, and collect without an appointment.

At a counter appointment bring your previous licence, a compliant photo taken within six months, and a debit or credit card. Check with CBR (Dutch driving test and medical fitness assessor) whether a health declaration is required for your age, health or licence categories. Keep the old licence for surrender at collection. For online RDW (Dutch vehicle and driving licence authority) renewal, the ready email usually comes after two working days; applications made Friday–Monday can take three. Wait for the message and follow this municipality’s collection arrangements. Collect within three months; after that, RDW requires a new application. If you renew online through RDW, keep the application code sent by email or SMS after an approved photographer or photo booth submits your digital photo and signature. The code is valid for six months and is required to apply. DigiD (the Dutch digital ID for government websites) login using SMS verification alone is not sufficient.
