Where to activate your electronic ID in Iceland

Mostly bank branches, each with its own rules

In-person activation is done at registration points, and in practice that usually means a bank branch. Banks differ on whether they serve people who are not customers, what they charge and how you arrange a visit. Check a branch in your city for the ID it asks you to bring. Some municipal service centres help only with their own online portal, not with activation.

    Íslandsbanki — Húsavík

    Garðarsbraut 5, 640 Húsavík

Check that a booked time is really free before you travel, as opening hours alone do not guarantee a slot.

Bring your phone or smart device and a valid original accepted identity document. Auðkenni accepts passports, qualifying EEA/Schengen travel identity cards, physical driving licences from Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden or Finland, Icelandic identity cards issued since 1 March 2024, and Icelandic residence cards. Digital IDs, old laminated paper cards, emergency passports and extended passports are not accepted. Your name and birth date must match Registers Iceland. A guardian can approve a minor’s application through Auðkenni beforehand; otherwise attend together with valid ID for both and sign as required. Choose and keep your PIN private. A valid Icelandic passport or identity card and NFC device may instead allow app self-registration from age 13, with guardian consent below 18.

    Landsbankinn — Húsavík

    Garðarsbraut 19, 640 Húsavík

The Auðkenni app works with a foreign phone number, so you do not need an Icelandic one.

Bring your device and valid original accepted ID: a passport, a physical driving licence from Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden or Finland, a qualifying EEA/Schengen travel identity card, an Icelandic identity card issued since 1 March 2024, or an Icelandic residence card. Your name and birth date must match Registers Iceland. Digital documents, old laminated paper cards, emergency passports and extended passports are not accepted. Under-18s need guardian consent: a guardian can sign electronically at mitt.audkenni.is, after which the applicant visits the branch within 30 days with valid ID. Alternatively, attend together with valid ID for both. Choose your PIN privately; nobody can activate the credentials on your behalf. Landsbankinn confirms that electronic-ID activation is free for its customers. For non-customers, the fee is ISK 1200 (tariff effective 25 August 2026); confirm the current charge when booking.

    Sparisjóður Þingeyinga — Húsavík

    Garðarsbraut 26, 640 Húsavík

Go in person for the identity check and ask which option the branch can set up for your device.

Bring your device and valid original accepted identification, such as a passport. Digital or paper identity documents are not accepted. SIM credentials require an Icelandic phone number; the app uses internet access. Eligible Icelandic-passport or ID-card holders aged 13+ can instead use app self-registration with NFC; minors need guardian approval.
