Options
Compare Ordinary, Non-Resident, Basic, Salary, Digital, Student, Business, and Multi-Currency Accounts
Legal status, payments, cash, currencies, credit, and support needs determine the useful product.
An ordinary current account is the flexible default for salary, rent, bills, card payments and transfers. The provider chooses whether to accept the applicant under its commercial and risk policy. A resident package may assume a Spanish address and tax profile. A non-resident package is designed for people whose tax residence is elsewhere and can require periodic proof of that status. Neither label grants immigration or tax residence.
A cuenta de pago básica is the regulated fallback for eligible people who need essential payment access. It supports euro cash deposits and withdrawals, direct debits, a debit or prepaid card, and transfers. It does not promise an overdraft, credit card, loan, cheque book, interest, foreign-currency wallet, investment or business service. Ask for it by its exact name because a bank's commercial basic-branded account may be a different product.
A salary, pension, youth or student account can waive fees or add benefits when monthly income, age, enrolment, card use, digital correspondence, minimum balance or other conditions continue. Model the cost after graduation, job loss or a payroll change. A gift or temporary bonus is not a substitute for the contract's ordinary annual cost.
A digital account can offer fast onboarding and low routine costs, but test cash deposits, branch help, Spanish-language support, joint ownership, power of attorney, certified documents, cheque handling, urgent card replacement and access after a foreign phone-number change. A branch account can be better for cash, complex identity evidence, business or vulnerable users, but may charge more or restrict counter transactions.
A business account separates company money, authorised users, payroll, tax, merchant acquiring and accounting integrations. Autónomos are not always legally required to use a dedicated account, but separation improves evidence and control. A company's funds must not be treated as the director's personal money.
A multi-currency or foreign payment account can reduce some conversion friction but requires comparison of the exchange-rate spread, transfer fee, recipient fee, weekend markup, safeguarding and legal entity. Verify every provider in the Banco de España registers. A payment or electronic-money institution can safeguard customer funds differently from a bank deposit.
Choose an ordinary account where acceptance, service and full functions fit; request the regulated basic account when eligible and ordinary access fails; choose salary or student pricing only if conditions are sustainable; and use a suitable business account for organisational money. An existing EEA IBAN may lawfully handle many euro payments, but practical Spanish cash, tax, payroll or provider needs can still justify a Spanish account.
Screening
Understand Identity, NIE or NIF, Tax Residence, Address, Income, AML, Sanctions, and Refusal
Account access and anti-money-laundering checks are related but legally distinct decisions.
For an ordinary account, both parties must accept the contract. A bank can apply its commercial criteria and can decline without offering credit-like risk or a particular product. It cannot reject an applicant on discriminatory grounds such as nationality, residence, birthplace, racial or ethnic origin, sex, religion, age, disability or gender identity. The Banco de España opening guidance separates that protection from lawful identity and risk checks.
Every provider must identify the customer and understand account purpose, expected activity, tax residence, beneficial owner and source of funds. It can request a passport or national identity document, NIE or NIF where relevant, TIE or EU certificate, Spanish and foreign address, tax identification numbers, employment or study, business activity, payslips, tax returns, contracts, sale or inheritance records, and explanations for unusual transfers. The NIE identifies a foreign national in Spanish procedures; it is not a residence card or proof of tax residence.
A provider must also screen sanctions, politically exposed persons, fraud and money-laundering risk. A foreign nationality, cash use or international transfer is not automatically wrongdoing, but incomplete, contradictory or implausible evidence can prevent opening or later restrict the account. Ask for the exact missing category and provide an indexed, proportionate response through the secure channel. The bank may be legally limited in what it can disclose about an AML report.
The regulated basic account has stronger access rules. Credit institutions offering payment accounts must provide it to a person lawfully resident in the EU even without a fixed address, an asylum applicant, or a person without a residence permit whose expulsion is impossible. Under the official eligibility page, refusal can still apply if the person already has a current account in Spain, opening conflicts with national security or public order, or required AML and terrorist-financing information is not supplied.
A basic account does not force approval of an overdraft, loan, credit card, business facility or unsupported foreign-currency use. It also does not waive tax-reporting declarations. Every holder must disclose all tax residences and tax identification numbers under the applicable CRS, FATCA and domestic rules and update changes.
An employee, student, family member, EU mover, third-country resident, non-resident and autónomo may face different documents and product fit, but the same anti-discrimination and AML framework. Ask the bank to state whether it is rejecting the ordinary product, the regulated basic account, the vulnerability waiver, or only missing evidence. Those are four different decisions and complaint records.
Evidence
Compare Registered Providers and Prepare a Secure Identity, Tax, Address, Income, and Funds File
A complete, consistent file reduces delay without giving a seller unnecessary personal data.
Shortlist only providers whose legal entity and permitted activity appear in the Banco de España or relevant home-state register. Record the entity name, country, bank or payment-institution status, branch, supervisor, deposit or safeguarding scheme, complaint address, cash network and emergency support. A familiar app or trade name can belong to a different legal entity than expected.
Compare the pre-contract fee-information document for the same usage pattern: maintenance, administration, debit and credit cards, replacements, Spanish and foreign ATMs, branch cash, SEPA and international transfers, instant transfers, direct debits, foreign exchange, paper correspondence, overdraft and rejected payments. Use the Banco de España comparator and then verify the individual offer because reported representative fees do not prove personal eligibility.
Prepare a valid passport or EEA identity document, NIE or NIF evidence where available, TIE or EU registration, Spanish and foreign addresses, tax-residence self-certification and every relevant tax identification number. Proof of address can be a padrón certificate, lease, utility, public-authority letter or foreign record depending on provider policy. A non-resident account can require a current non-residence certificate or other prescribed evidence. Ask what issue date and translation the institution accepts before ordering it.
Add the purpose and financial profile: employment contract, recent payslips, pension, study enrolment, benefit, autónomo or company census record, business activity, expected monthly inflows and outgoing transfers. For a property sale, inheritance, gift, investment redemption, loan, savings transfer or cash accumulation, attach the contract, tax, probate, bank trail or invoices that connect origin, owner and amount. A screenshot of another app is weaker than an official statement.
For a basic-account vulnerability waiver, gather household composition, income and property or company-interest evidence. If ordinary documents do not exist, the official rules permit a qualifying municipal social-services report. All holders must satisfy the test.
Reconcile names, transliteration, birth date, nationality, passport, NIE, addresses, phone, email, tax countries, employer, account ownership and source-of-funds documents. Explain mismatches with a marriage, name-change, renewed-passport or civil record. Show originals only for verification and keep them; do not let a branch retain the only passport or TIE.
Upload through the bank's authenticated app or encrypted portal, or provide copies in a verified branch. Never email identity and financial records to a link from an unsolicited message. Preserve the application, document list, fee information, terms, privacy notice, KYC requests, replies and refusal. Deposit protection under the Spanish FGD is generally EUR 100,000 per depositor per legal entity, aggregated across its brands, so record the entity rather than counting each app as a separate bank.
Open Safely
Apply Securely, Complete KYC, Review the Contract, Activate Controls, Test Payments, and Move Activity
Account opening is complete only after access, limits, fees, identity and payment controls are verified.
-
Verify the entity and channel. Start from the official register or provider domain, not an advert, message or QR code. Confirm whether onboarding is app video-identification, branch, post or qualified electronic signature and whether every joint holder must appear.
-
Request the exact product. State ordinary resident, non-resident, regulated cuenta de pago básica, vulnerability waiver, salary, student or business account. Ask the bank to record the statutory request separately from any commercial rejection.
-
Submit KYC securely. Provide the indexed identity, tax, address, activity and source-of-funds file. Answer questions truthfully and ask for a receipt or application reference. Do not invent Spanish residence, borrow another person's address, split funds to avoid review, or pay an intermediary to create documents.
-
Compare the final contract. Match the legal entity, IBAN, holders, authorised users, account type, fee-information document, maintenance conditions, card, cash, transfer, FX, overdraft, interest, statements, communications, data sharing, deposit protection, complaint route and closure. Decline optional insurance, investments or credit unless independently wanted.
-
Sign and save the complete pack. Download the signed contract, fee schedule, key payment terms, privacy information, deposit-guarantee sheet and application evidence. A verbal branch promise is not a durable fee condition.
-
Activate without exposing credentials. Set a unique passphrase, app lock, biometric or device controls, transaction alerts and sensible card, transfer, cash and online-purchase limits. Record the bank's emergency number independently. Never disclose PIN, one-time code, full password or remote-control access to someone calling as the bank.
-
Verify the account. Check holder names, IBAN, tax details, mailing address, card spelling, account class and pricing conditions. Make a small incoming and outgoing transfer, card purchase, ATM inquiry and direct-debit test as relevant. Confirm the effective exchange rate with a small conversion before moving a large amount.
-
Move activity in stages. Update payroll, Social Security, Tax Agency, rent, utilities, insurer, school, subscriptions and counterparties. Review each first debit. Keep enough money in the old account for delayed charges and refunds.
-
Use the switching service where suitable. The domestic account-switch process is initiated at the new provider, free, and capped at thirteen business days. Specify the execution date and whether the old account and cards should close. Investments, term deposits, loans and pension products require separate action.
-
Audit after 30 days. Reconcile salary, recurring credits, bills, cards, fees, refunds and old-account activity. Only close after all holders authorise it, debts are cleared and a zero-balance closure certificate is available.
Full Cost
Calculate Maintenance, Cards, Cash, Transfers, FX, Overdraft, Bundles, and Zero-Fee Conditions
Price the account using expected behaviour rather than an opening promotion.
As checked on 26 August 2026, the maximum single combined charge for a regulated basic payment account is EUR 3 per month. The official fee page says this includes opening, use and closure; unlimited euro cash deposits and withdrawals; debit or prepaid card payments; and 120 annual euro direct-debit and transfer operations within the EU. Operations beyond 120 and third-party ATM costs can add charges within the stated limits. The cap can be updated, so check live.
The basic account can be free where all holders satisfy the household income threshold tied to live IPREM and have no rights in property other than the habitual home or in commercial companies. The bank has thirty days from complete evidence to decide in writing; silence means acceptance. Free status lasts two years and renews in two-year periods while the conditions continue. It applies from the request if approved, so retain the timestamp.
Ordinary account maintenance and administration fees are generally commercially set. Build an annual scenario for maintenance, each card, replacement, Spanish own-bank and other-bank ATM use, branch cash, counter transfers, SEPA and non-SEPA payments, instant transfer, direct debit rejection, paper statements, cheque, account certificate, overdraft, unpaid debit and interest. Use the official comparator and the personal fee-information document.
A zero-fee salary or digital account can require a minimum monthly payroll or pension, recurring bills, card transactions, app-only statements, balance, age or other products. Price the first month in which the condition fails. A job loss or graduation can make a previously free account expensive without the bank changing the contract. Do not buy an insurance policy, fund, credit card or loan only to avoid a smaller maintenance charge; compare its premium, risk, tax and exit cost.
For foreign currency, calculate the provider's exchange rate against a neutral reference, explicit fee, transfer fee, correspondent and recipient deductions, weekend markup, card surcharge, cash fee and ATM operator charge. Decline dynamic currency conversion unless its shown all-in euro cost is genuinely better. A multi-currency wallet avoids conversion only while the needed currency is already held.
Overdraft is credit, not a routine payment feature. Price authorised and unauthorised interest, commission, fixed claim charge and consequences of a rejected bill. Keep alerts and a buffer rather than depending on it. A debit card and basic account need not include credit.
Finally, protection has value but is not a fee. Eligible bank deposits generally receive EUR 100,000 protection per depositor per legal entity, not per brand. A payment institution's safeguarded balance is a different legal structure. Record the contracting entity and never pay an application agent for a product the bank provides directly.
Lifecycle
Manage Cards, Tax Residence, Fee Changes, Switching, Closure, Dormancy, and Payment Deadlines
Keep identity, tax and contact records current and react before new terms or dispute windows take effect.
Update expired passports, TIEs, NIE or DNI links, legal name, address, phone, email, employment, business activity, beneficial ownership, authorised users and every tax residence or tax identification number. A move abroad does not automatically convert or close the account. Ask whether the provider will redesignate it as non-resident, require a current certificate, change fees, limit services or close it under the contract. Preserve the update receipt.
Review monthly payment information and the free annual fee statement. Reconcile conditions for salary, card use, balance and bundled products before each charging period. A bank can apply a clearly favourable change immediately, but a non-favourable account-condition change requires at least two months' individual notice under the current guidance. The notice can treat silence as acceptance, so reject, switch or close before the effective date if necessary.
Basic-account vulnerability status lasts two years and can renew while all holders qualify. Calendar the evidence request. If circumstances change, notify accurately; if vulnerability begins later, apply for free status then. Card expiry, device replacement and foreign phone changes require separate planning, especially before travel. Maintain another lawful payment method during authentication or card replacement.
Use account switching when both providers operate in Spain and the included payment operations should move. The maximum is thirteen business days, but select a date after expected salary and major bills and keep the old account funded. Check every payer and creditor because stale or irregular instructions can be missed. Linked investments, loans, term deposits, merchant facilities and pension products remain separate.
To close, stop new use, identify pending card authorisations and cheques, move recurring payments and refunds, repay overdraft and fees, withdraw or transfer the balance, return requested instruments, obtain all joint-holder approvals, and request written closure. Download statements and tax records first. Do not abandon a zero-balance account: agreed fees can continue until legal closure. Keep the certificate permanently.
Payment deadlines vary. A qualifying authorised direct debit can be refundable within eight weeks; an unauthorised debit must be reported without unjustified delay and within thirteen months. A card or transfer fraud report should be immediate even where a longer outer limit exists. Returning a supplier's debit does not cancel the underlying contract or debt.
Keep the bank able to reach you and monitor inactive accounts. Dormancy does not erase ownership, tax, fees, anti-fraud review or eventual statutory abandoned-balance rules. Before moving, job loss, graduation, separation, death of a joint holder or business closure, review ownership, powers, credit, direct debits, deposit protection and emergency access, then record the next action and deadline.
Problems
Respond to Refusal, AML Freeze, Phishing, Unauthorised Payments, Unfair Fees, and Closure Problems
Stop financial loss first, preserve evidence, then use the bank and supervisory complaint sequence.
For a refusal, ask the bank to identify in writing whether it declined an ordinary commercial account, the statutory basic account, the vulnerability waiver, or particular evidence. Correct a missing passport, tax number, address, name link or source-of-funds document through the secure channel. If the stated reason is nationality or another protected ground, preserve the application and comparator evidence and complain. If it is an existing Spanish account, explain whether that account is actually functional or closed.
For an AML or sanctions freeze, request the action's scope, legal or contractual basis, documents required, complaint route and treatment of essential payments. Provide a coherent transaction trail, ownership, source and purpose. The bank can be restricted from disclosing a suspicious-activity report, but it still must handle the customer fairly within the law. Do not evade review by fragmenting transfers or opening accounts through nominees. Urgent rent, food, salary or benefit access can justify legal and social-support advice.
For phishing or device compromise, stop responding, call the independently verified bank number, block cards and online access, lower limits, revoke unknown devices, change credentials from a clean device, and notify the provider of each disputed transaction immediately. Preserve messages, URLs, phone numbers, timestamps, statements, authentication logs and police report. The bank will assess authorisation, authentication, negligence and fraud under payment law; do not accept a caller's claim that moving money to a safe account is protective.
For direct debits, the official payment guidance distinguishes an eight-week qualifying authorised-debit request from the thirteen-month outer period for an unauthorised debit. Ask for a receipt and reasoned response. Separately cancel the supplier mandate and dispute the underlying invoice where appropriate.
Challenge unexplained maintenance, card, cash, FX or overdraft fees with the contract, fee-information document, annual fee statement, eligibility record and notice. A zero-fee condition that was never met differs from a fee changed without two months' notice. For switching or closure failure, add the signed instruction, selected date, old and new statements, rejected bills and resulting loss.
The complaint sequence is mandatory. First write to the entity's customer service department or ombudsman and keep proof of receipt. Under the Banco de España procedure, escalate after an unsatisfactory answer or no answer within 15 business days for payment services, one month for another consumer complaint, or two months for another non-consumer complaint. A consumer has one year from the bank complaint to escalate, and the original event cannot be more than five years old when first raised with the bank.
Banco de España addresses banking conduct; CNMV handles many investment issues and the insurance supervisor handles insurance. Its report does not replace a binding court order or urgent injunction. Use police for crime, data-protection channels for unlawful data use, legal aid or court for enforceable repayment, and FIN-NET for eligible cross-border EEA disputes.
