Hand in your renewal application in person and check the opening hours before you go, as no appointment is needed.
Check whether the digital application can reuse a qualifying photo from your passport or the national identity-photo register before arranging a new photograph or a visit. Photo reuse also covers renewals for people aged 65 and over; photo-age limits still apply. If the application requires a new photo, follow the district commissioner’s instructions for attendance and a signature sample. Bring a medical certificate if you need glasses or contact lenses for driving, or have a condition affecting driving. A driving-ability test is required if the licence expired more than two years ago. Heavy-vehicle renewals always require medical evidence; professional driving rights also have training requirements. Delivery of plastic driving licences can be delayed. Ask the office about urgent travel and current delivery timing. A digital licence becomes available after processing; a printed temporary permit can be requested from a district commissioner. Both are valid only in Iceland and do not replace the plastic card abroad.
