Offices for residence permit applications and renewals in Belgium

Your municipality’s foreigners’ desk is where the paperwork begins

Residence cards and permit renewals are dealt with at the foreigners’ desk of the municipality where you live. Offices differ in how they take first contact and which groups they serve, such as students, permit holders and EU citizens. Some assign every appointment themselves after you phone, and some close parts of the week.

Tell the foreigners department which procedure you need, and come in the morning or book an afternoon appointment.

Ask for the document checklist for your nationality, reason for residence and current status before visiting. Explain whether you are applying for the first time or renewing an existing document. For the electronic-card request, all applicants must attend, including minors. Bring a valid national identity card or passport and the previous residence card or the relevant annex. A recent compliant photo can be brought; from age six, a paid counter photo is available with an appointment. Card fees depend on the document and procedure; payment is by debit card.
