Offices for residence permit applications and renewals in Belgium

Your municipality’s foreigners’ desk is where the paperwork begins

Residence cards and permit renewals are dealt with at the foreigners’ desk of the municipality where you live. Offices differ in how they take first contact and which groups they serve, such as students, permit holders and EU citizens. Some assign every appointment themselves after you phone, and some close parts of the week.

Pick the evidence appointment to extend a limited permit, or the status-change one to apply for permanent status.

Contact the team before your current document expires and ask which evidence and deadline apply. State the card you hold and the status you want, and keep any request for additional evidence with your file. Annex 16 is used for B-to-K applications and Annex 22 for EU/F permanent-status applications. Do not treat permanent residence as automatic after a fixed number of years, or card production as an approved extension of the underlying right.

Book the intake for stays over three months, or an information appointment if you are unsure what applies.

Ask for the requirements for your nationality, purpose of residence, current status and family circumstances before attending. Explain whether you are applying for the first time or have an open file; bring the documents the department asks for. Use the evidence-delivery appointment if it requests further proof. No single decision period or permit fee applies to every residence basis, and a card-production appointment is not a substitute for introducing the residence case.
