Offices for residence permit applications and renewals in Belgium

Your municipality’s foreigners’ desk is where the paperwork begins

Residence cards and permit renewals are dealt with at the foreigners’ desk of the municipality where you live. Offices differ in how they take first contact and which groups they serve, such as students, permit holders and EU citizens. Some assign every appointment themselves after you phone, and some close parts of the week.

Phone the migration team first, because the extension appointment only exists for certain procedures.

First issue or renewal: recent white-background photo and Annex 26, 19ter or the annex for your procedure. Extension: current orange card and relevant annex. For loss/theft, obtain the police loss certificate first and arrange a duplicate appointment; a photo is required for the police certificate. Do not treat the orange card as permission for ordinary Schengen travel; ask about destination and return visas before travelling.

Ask for your renewal for the next academic year at least 15 days before your card expires.

Bring passport, valid A card, next-year enrolment form, long-stay health-insurance evidence and accepted financial-resources evidence. Recognised-education students also need the standard study-progress form and previous-year marks; doctoral students are exempt from those last two items. Private-education students need the definitive programme enrolment, exam-participation/results evidence or an institutional justification for non-participation where applicable, recent criminal-record extract and OCMW (public social welfare centre) no-social-assistance certificate; ask the Social House for that certificate in time. Federal private-education guidance currently accepts financial AVI certificates from Studely or Ready Study Go International. Bring printed documents or download all PDFs to your phone before attending.
