Offices for residence permit applications and renewals in Belgium

Your municipality’s foreigners’ desk is where the paperwork begins

Residence cards and permit renewals are dealt with at the foreigners’ desk of the municipality where you live. Offices differ in how they take first contact and which groups they serve, such as students, permit holders and EU citizens. Some assign every appointment themselves after you phone, and some close parts of the week.

If your right to stay also needs extending, book that separate appointment first and the card appointment afterwards.

Bring the current residence card or child document, or loss/theft certificate, and an ICAO-compliant photo taken within six months. For a guardian or foster carer, bring the relevant authority evidence. For collection keep the old document or annex and PIN/PUK codes; ask staff whether representation is possible for your card and circumstances.

Book the separate extension appointment before your orange card expires, and not the electronic card one.

For an extension, you need your current AI. Confirm whether your file needs additional evidence. A new AI is a different request with separate charges and a photo; the city additionally asks asylum applicants for Annex 26/26quinquies. Do not treat the short extension checklist as the complete requirements for a new document.
