Offices for residence permit applications and renewals in Belgium

Your municipality’s foreigners’ desk is where the paperwork begins

Residence cards and permit renewals are dealt with at the foreigners’ desk of the municipality where you live. Offices differ in how they take first contact and which groups they serve, such as students, permit holders and EU citizens. Some assign every appointment themselves after you phone, and some close parts of the week.

Book a personal appointment within eight days of arriving, because registration is not available online.

Bring passport, required visa, a compliant photograph no older than six months and category-specific evidence. Where a federal administrative contribution applies, bring proof of payment. Ask which civil documents need Dutch translation or authentication. The municipal application is free, but federal contributions and card charges can apply; do not treat the residence process as entirely free.
