Where to get help with an unemployment claim in Iceland

The claim is made online, the offices help with the rest

You make your unemployment claim through the Directorate of Labour’s online service, and the decision is made after you submit it, not at an office counter. The regional offices are still the place to ask questions, request counselling through your account and get support in your area. Pick the office closest to you and confirm opening times before you go.

Apply online if you are 18 to 69, have worked in Iceland, live there and can take ordinary work.

Prepare employment-period confirmation and your final payslip, including holiday-pay settlement. Other payments, study or recent sickness may require additional evidence. Upload requested documents through My Pages and check its messages regularly; missing evidence delays assessment. Keep a record of the employers you applied to for the monthly confirmation. Report income, part-time or contract work and changes in your circumstances through My Pages. Attend agreed meetings and follow your job-search plan; missed obligations can affect payments. Confirm your job search between the 20th and 25th each month, including while the application is pending. Late confirmation can delay payment. If you have missed the 3rd of the following month, contact the regional service office immediately: the current application guide says the application is automatically deregistered and contact with the office is needed for a later payout. Do not assume payments will restart automatically. Check My Pages for your own decision and payment information. If you study, apply for a study contract through My Pages and supply a school certificate showing your credits and study arrangements. Students are generally excluded; the ordinary exception allows up to 12 credits per semester and requires that you are not eligible for a student loan. Separate exceptions may cover a semester already underway when you lose work, or approved further-education programmes. Ask the Directorate to assess your case before relying on an exception; active job search and availability for work still apply.
